Duopoly: Why are there only 2 Candidates Debating during the General Election?

There could be 6 candidates on the stage Tuesday during CNN’s Democratic presidential primary debates. During the recent GOP debates there were so many candidates they had to have 2 separate broadcasts. If it’s a good thing to have so many people debating (which I agree is good) during the primaries why is it such a bad thing for the general election. The reason? It’s called a two-party monopoly (duopoly). And it’s undemocratic. And we shouldn’t allow them to limit our choices? Competition in politics makes for better government.
